About Alisa

Alisa Horn, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, studied with Professor Peter Spurbeck, former principal cellist of the Memphis Symphony and professor of cello at the University of Memphis.  She received her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the University of Michigan, studying with Professor Anthony Elliott, and completed her Master of Music in Cello Performance in 2006 at Northwestern University with Professor Hans Jorgen Jensen.

While in Ann Arbor, Alisa won the University of Michigan Concerto Competition, performing Ernest Bloch’s “Schelomo."  During graduate school at Northwestern University, she was a regular member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and won Second Prize in the WAMSO-Minnesota Orchestra Volunteer Association’s Young Artist Competition.  Alisa has given numerous solo and chamber music performances throughout the country and most recently performed Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" and Tchaikovsky's "Pezzo Capriccioso" with the Gadsden Symphony Orchestra and Miaskovsky's Cello Concerto with the Oakville Chamber Orchestra of Ontario, Canada. Alisa has attended many summer programs including the Aspen Music Festival and School, Tanglewood, Sewanee Summer Music Center, Meadowmount School of Music, and the Henry Mancini Institute, where she was appointed principal cellist during its tenth and final season.  

Alisa has joined jazz greats, Bill Mays and Marvin Stamm, to form The Inventions Trio which performs a fusion of jazz and classical repertoire.  The Trio released its debut recording, “Fantasy," on Palmetto Records which was voted one of the top new jazz releases of 2007 in The Village Voice and has been given four stars in Downbeat Magazine, as well as rave reviews in Jazziz and Jazz Times magazines.   After highly successful national tours in 2007 and 2008, the Trio continues to perform frequently and has released a second album, "Delaware River Suite" including works by Bill Mays, Villa-Lobos, Miles Davis, Marvin Stamm, Django Reinhardt, and Antonio Carlos Jobim.  

With pianist, Jue He, Alisa recorded the Rachmaninoff and Miaskovsky Sonatas for Cello and Piano and in addition to several performances in Chicago, Denver, and Memphis, the duo was featured on McGraw-Hill’s Young Artist Showcase, WQXR-FM in New York City.

Alisa is currently performing in the 2009 Tony Award-Winning Musical, "Next to Normal" on Broadway and also performed in the 2007 Tony Award-Winning Best Musical, "Spring Awakening" on Broadway.  She has collaborated with many singer/song-writers and composers, including Sam Winch, Ann Hampton-Calloway, Eric Hachikian, and Ivan Rubenstein-Gillis among others and has played on several film and TV soundtracks including the documentary film, "Aliens Among Us," the upcoming film, "Paper Man," ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," ABC's "Life on Mars," and "The Tony Awards." 

Currently, Alisa is an active free-lance cellist in New York City and she enjoys performing and teaching a wide variety of musical genres from classical to jazz to rock and beyond.  She is completing her Suzuki Teacher Training at The School for Strings, New York and is on the faculty of In the Pocket NYC and MusicWise NYC.
